Since Billboard Magazine didn't provide a chart for Alternative Rock tracks until 1988, no chart for a national audience was available. Instead, here is a year·end countdown provided by radio station KROQ of Los Angeles. This chart gives some idea of the songs and artists played on alternative stations that year.
KROQ gets credit as the very first Modern Rock radio station ever! At year's end starting in 1980, KROQ ranked the top "106.7" songs of each year, based on votes by their listeners. The 106.7 comes from their place on the FM dial.
