Notable New Bands And Artists: Stone Temple Pilots, Gin Blossoms Possibly more than any other band, Stone Temple Pilots (known by fans by their initials, STP) ushered in the post · grunge era in rock starting in 1993. With the late 1992 release of Core, their first nationally successful album, STP took the raspy guitar sounds of grunge and combined it with the "smoothness" of lead singer Scott Weiland to the thrill of album rock fans with the tracks Plush and Creep during 1993, not to mention others getting airplay on rock stations. STP went on to become even bigger the following year, breaking a Billboard chart record that stood for 13 years. STP formed in San Diego. |

Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, the Gin Blossoms saw their first national success in 1993 with release of their album New Miserable Experience. The album produced a Modern Rock number one in Found Out About You in early 1994. The Gin Blossoms mixed an "alternative" rock sound with a touch of jangle pop for their signature sound. They first acheived popularity around metro Phoenix, then toured often to gain a national audience. The band would see much popularity throughout the mid · 1990's until their breakup in 1997. |
