Album rock tracks hit a new apex at number one, and another supergroup rings in the new decade.
1990: Album Rock's "1974"!
Those who followed the late Casey Kasem's weekly radio show American Top 10 know that the year 1974 set the record for the most songs at number one on the Hot 100 pop chart, with 36 total. What year did this happen on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart? It was 1990! Following a recent trend on Billboard's other music charts, 24 different tracks topped the Album Rock Tracks chart during the year including some big names like the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, Bon Jovi, and Aerosmith, just to name a few.
1990 also marked the last time 20 or more tracks scored number one in a single year on the TRT chart, as technology was about to cause a seismic shift in the music industry over the next few years! This affected broadcasting, distribution, and even the method Billboard used to compile its weekly charts. Stay tuned...
Damn Yankees: Latest Supergroup Starts the 1990's
In the Rock world, the 1990's began much like the 1980's ended - with another new supergroup. This time, it was the Damn Yankees. The group consisted of "Motor City Madman" Ted Nugent, Tommy Shaw from Styx, Jack Blades from Night Ranger, and "newcomer" Michael Cartellone. Their self · titled debut album, predictably, was an instant success! Also fitting for a supergroup, they scored a number one on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart with the track Coming Of Age, with Come Again also proving popular with fans. The band would also produce one more successful album before calling it quits in 1996.
The Damn Yankees' style was hard · hitting hard rock, in the vein of Ted Nugent. This band and their style marked the end of two eras. First, they were the last of the supergroups to form and see success. Second, the emerging Grunge sound, along with the rising popularity of heavy metal and alternative rock would spawn many new bands and artists in the coming years. |
