Events that shaped Album Rock during that year

Kurt Cobain Suicide Shocks The Rock World

Less than three years after grunge band Nirvana exploded onto the rock scene, frontman Kurt Cobain committed suicide on April 5th in his Seattle home. He died from a self · inflicted gunshot to the head. Cobain was 27.

Kurt Cobain was known to be a heavy drug and alcohol user. He reportedly suffered from chronic brochitis and an unknown stomach condition, as well as mental issues such as ADHD and bi · polar disorder. This, plus the pressures of fame, likely led to his drug and alcohol use. Just prior to his death, he was in a rehab clinic in Los Angeles, had escaped from there without friends or family knowing, then returned to his Seattle home where he took his own life. His body wasn't discovered until three days later by an electrician who was at Cobain's home to install a security device. A suicide note was also found next to Cobain's body.[1]

As mentioned here at Radio Underground, Nirvana was a generation · defining band, pioneering the grunge style. The band instantly gained an enormous following with their first album Nevermind. Predictably, Cobain's death both shocked and saddened their huge fan base.

Several conspiracy theories exist surrounding his death, the most common being that it was a homicide rather than a suicide, possibly involving his widow Courtney Love. None of the conspiracies, including this one, have been proven.

More Changes to Rock Charts

By 1994, the line between Album Rock and Alternative Rock started becoming "blurry", as much crossover between artists and tracks on the two charts took place. Starting with the September 10th issue, Billboard began publishing both the Album Rock chart and the Modern Rock chart side · by · side on the same page. Billboard also upsized the Modern Rock chart from 30 to 40 tracks, making both charts the same size.

Billboard evolved with the times!

Chart Record Finally Falls!

Fans of the band Stone Temple Pilots gave them an early Christmas gift on December 17th. On this issue of Billboard, STP's track Interstate Love Song spent its 14th week at number one on the Album Rock chart, a new record! This eclipsed the old record of 13 weeks set by the Rolling Stones' Start Me Up which stood since 1981, the first year of the Album Rock chart. For good measure, Interstate Love Song lasted one more week following this, to give it a total of 15 weeks before falling out of number one the week of December 31st. How long would STP hold the record? Stay tuned...

Eagles Reunite

The band who claimed they would reunite when "Hell froze over", the Eagles did just that in 1994 with the successful release of their aptly · named album Hell Freezes Over. With tracks like Get Over It and Learn To Be Still, combined with, arguably, one of the best concert tours in several years, the Eagles thrilled rock fans with their 1994 comeback!

The Eagles gained enormous success in the 1970's with rock, pop, and for awhile, country fans with such classics as Take It Easy, Best Of My Love, One Of These Nights and Lyin' Eyes, just to name a few. The band shedded their rock · country fusion sound in 1976, adopting a pure rock sound with the iconic Hotel California, one of the most successful albums ever!

Following all of their success, infighting between band members led to their breakup in 1980. They apparently mended fences with their 1994 comeback. (NOTE: Since the passing of band member Glen Frey, videos of the Eagles' most beloved songs have become either unavailable or through limited availability possibly due to royalties and Frey's estate. I apologize for the inconvenience.)
